What does Uncle Stock do?
Back in 2009, I was an IT consultant, which gave me some extra cash. During a late hour drink, a friend suggested me to invest it in stocks - I hardly knew what they were - and gave me a book of Peter Lynch.
I read the book and made a simple spreadsheet which combined the most basic indicators explained in the book into a single score, which I used to make my stock investment decisions. These stock picks did not provide me any fortune, the method was very basic. I was also frustrated that my programming skills were a outdated, and I wanted to catch up with Java development. I looked for a good existing stock screener but I didn't find a good one for a reasonable cost. So I decided to build one myself, for myself. So I started to make a program that did exactly the same as my spreadsheet. I always loved the idea for as ITer to develop, operate and have ownership of an internet service all by my self, instead of making software for someone else. It appeared to me as ultimate independence. Because I had to learn the technology stack from scratch, It took me 6 months to make the first, ridiculous version of the software. After that, I kept on improving the it. Evenings, nights, weekends.. step by step, interacting with knowledgeable users - I could not have done it without them, improving the scoring, adding indicators, learning about value investing on the Internet, improving user experience, adding new features.
After 5 years of hard labour, Uncle Stock started to attract more users, and I could turn it into a service that users love and can really make a difference for them. The aim is now to give normal people like myself an affordable tool to become good investors that seek valuable companies to invest in for the long term.
