Begun in 1905 as the American Sanatorium Association to fight tuberculosis, the ATS, today, is an international organization involved in research, advocacy, disease prevention, patient and professional education, and the development of evidence-based standards for patient care. ATS PAR is the patient interest organization of the American Thoracic Society. Through this unique partnership both groups advance their mutual goal of reducing the burden of pulmonary, critical care and sleep diseases. The Foundation of the ATS supports the Society's programs, most notably its Research Program, which supports promising young investigators who often use their grants to pursue novel scientific inquiries.
