Careless Disregard at The Shard, London
Reviewed on 2019-04-27T11:53:05
For an extraordinarily priced lesson in being treated with careless disregard, I recommend a visit to the Shangri-La hotel at The Shard in London.Let's start with the good stuff. At 8 times the average nightly rate for London, you DO get the most exceptional view of London City - no question about it. The room features floor to ceiling glass walls and the view will absolutely blow you away. In room features are as you would expect, even if I found my upgraded room a bit crammed for space. Staff is professional to the point of almost seeming friendly (explained below), the Ting restaurant is good, the Cocktail bar is above average with a good selection and the same fantastic view.
But that's where it ends for me. Look, I'm sorry, but when I'm paying £800 a night for a room I expect nothing but the best. I spend well over a hundred nights a year on hotels around the world, I do believe I know a thing or two about what one can expect. And Shangri-La failed, on three occasions.
I arrived a couple of hours early. Having already informed the hotel staff in advance of my flight arrival, most hotels would do what they could to ensure the room is ready or at least moved to the top of the list for cleaning and preparation. No such thing. After being told that my room wasn't _quite_ ready yet but it should be ready within the hour, I sat down and waited. Not one, not two, but three hours - 15:00 on the dot to be precise - which is exactly when the hotel promises rooms to be ready. So you could say, they fulfilled their promise. I can then say, on every other hotel I've ever stayed at - even when arriving a bit early - they go out of their way to ensure I get my room as quickly as possible. At Shangri-La, no one cared.
Later that evening I invite some friends over (we're all in town for a business convention) to the Cocktail bar. While sipping away at our £20-a-piece cocktails, a glass literally shatters in the hand of one of my friends. I'm telling you, he did nothing but pick it up for a sip. His cocktail spills all over himself and the table and floor. As one would expect, upon realising, the staff rushes in with cloths and so on. And _they quickly start wiping the table and floor_. My friend is sitting there, soaked. Only after commenting on the obvious lack of priorities does the staff realise; "oh... here's a cloth sir". And about half an hour later they DO come back to offer to pay for cleaning of the clothes; by then it was all but too late. No one at Shangri-La cared.
My last disappointment was at checkout. As many hotels do, my card had been pre-authorized to cover the cost of my stay. This is fine. But the checkout staff didn't obviously care enough to actually make use of this £2500 authorization on my card, and proceeded to bill me for the full amount. I'm obviously fine with them billing my card for the stay - but leaving a £2500 block on a guest's card for 30 days without even informing the guest so one can make another payment choice - that's just showing complete disregard. I complained about this and the hotel staff was very quick to respond, saying it was a mistake and "procedures have been rectified" and the block on my card had been lifted and this would show after 3-5 business days. Also this was a complete falsum; nothing changed. But they "hoped I enjoyed my stay anyway".
And that's my overall experience of the staff at Shangri-La. They treat you with complete disregard.read more
