Peru.com nace un 17 de junio de 1997, sin embargo no fue hasta inicios de 1998 que Peru.com cobra vida propia, con la publicación de un directorio de contenidos, con enlaces a los primeros sitios webs del Perú, divididos en categorías, llegando a recopilar en menos de un año a más de mil vínculos. En el 2000, en plena crisis de Internet conocida como la "Burbuja punto com", Peru.com apuesta por convertirse en un medio de prensa digital, contratando a casi una decena de periodistas, y generando contenido exclusivo para el sitio. La apuesta, arriesgada desde cualquier punto de vista, tenía un objetivo claro: convertirse en el primer medio digital peruano y ser el sitio de consulta obligatoria de los peruanos en el mundo. ¿Cómo sacar adelante el proyecto? Pensar en vender publicidad en Internet en esa época era casi una utopía, sin embargo Peru.com se propuso a conseguirlo, y para ello tuvo que "educar" a las agencias y empresas sobre el nuevo medio, y de las posibilidades que se le abrían de invertir en Internet. Con buen contenido y propuestas innovadoras para su tiempo, el portal de los peruanos comenzó a captar tráfico, despertando el interés de varias empresas, que decidieron "debutar" en Internet pauteando en el portal. A partir de entonces, el crecimiento de Peru.com es un ejemplo de éxito de cómo una "punto com" pionera en el país, logró mantenerse en el tiempo y convertirse en el principal medio digital del Perú.
