5 Day NT Outback Camping Adventure ATA booking

Reviewed on 2021-05-23T05:14:15

I was also a member of the group on the 5 Day NT Outback Adventure tour which is operated jointly by Intrepid and Adventure Tours. While tour members who booked directly through Intrepid have had their concerns addressed, travellers who booked the SAME tour for the SAME price and experienced the SAME problems have not had their concerns met as effectively by ATA. I'm wondering why when ATA state on their website "So no matter which brand you've booked through you're travelling with the best" they really don't look after their customers as well. We initially attempted to book the Intrepid tour but were told there was only one seat available. I was later contacted by Adventure Tours who advised that this could be fixed by using a bigger bus and both of us could join the tour. I was advised that ATA acted as agents for Intrepid tours. I booked this tour thinking I could depend on the Intrepid reputation, I've taken quite a number of Intrepid tours overseas over the years and always been happy with their professional operation. Given the problems with the organisation of the tour, changed itinerary and difficulties with the guide on this trip that has been detailed by other members of the SAME trip I feel that no matter who the booking was made with customers need to be treated with the same care and consideration as Intrepid have shown to people who booked through them. Intrepid have told me not to contact them when really some of their reputation is involved here and they need to acknowledge that. I need to warn people who have booked through ATA for the upcoming 5 Day Outback Camping tours this season that even though you think you're on an Intrepid trip, you've paid the same price and you're experiencing the same trip ATA is a different operation and do not hold to the same standards. If you experience any problems ATA could well not listen so be warned!

Issues during tour - but since appropriately addressed by Intrepid

Reviewed on 2021-05-18T07:32:42

I undertook the five day Outback Adventure Basix tour over 3 - 7 May, and experienced the same issues posted about by fellow group members (primarily related to the tour guide, changed itinerary and poor communication etc). While still overall a unique and enjoyable experience, the tour was clearly not up to the usual Intrepid standard. As a long term repeat Intrepid traveller, I was somewhat disappointed and contacted Intrepid directly with my concerns following the tour. However, Intrepid have restored my faith by appropriately responding to the concerns raised by many of the group in a timely fashion, and by instituting a number of measures to ensure the same issues will not occur again the future. I look forward to future tours and am confident in continuing to recommend Intrepid to friends and family.

These stars reflect the quick response Intrepid made to a series of criticisms from a group I was part of in a NT Outback tour this month. They have addressed all the issues we highlighted and outlined what they planned to do to improve matters. Well done. Great for restoring client trust.

Still waiting for refund

Reviewed on 2021-05-15T13:56:54

My wife and I are still waiting for our $800 refund on a trip to Italy we scheduled over 2 years ago.We cancelled when we were still supposed to get a 100% refund due to COVID. They kept saying it was being processed then stopped communicating at all. We had done two previous trips with them in prior years that went fine. But they can't be trusted now due to COVID. Do not trust old reviews.

Disappointed: Intrepid Outback Adventure 3-7 May

Reviewed on 2021-05-13T04:34:11

My partner and I took part in the Intrepid Outback Adventure tour 3-7 May. We’re in compete agreement with the reviews from our fellow travellers below.I want to elaborate on what has been said as all in all, this was disappointing and incomplete. It is my second Intrepid tour, and the difference in quality is significant. We have lost faith. Itinerary and Communication Of a 5 day itinerary, we spent the entire day 4 driving back to Alice Springs, with no walks or sites at all. This was supposedly to pick up supplies, but occurred at the expense of our experience. We did not do any of the East Macs as listed online on this tour’s itinerary. Accordingly after the tour we rented a car and went to them ourselves - Trephina Gorge, Arltunga, Emily and Jesse Gaps. It is laughable to lose a full day of a 5 day tour with little explanation. Intrepid’s website states ‘all trips will include visits to Kata Tjuta, Uluru, King’s Canyon, Palm Valley and the West MacDonnell Ranges’. We booked this tour partly to see Palm Valley as a 4WD is required. We did not go to Palm Valley, no explanation given. 1/5 compulsory inclusions missed accordingly. On the theme of communication, this was lax throughout the trip. While the guide’s stories of Indigenous significance were great, this and good spirits deteriorated on days 4 and 5. For example, at Ormiston Gorge (night 4, morning day 5), all we were told was ‘toilets there, waterhole there, walk there’. Bush Camping and Sleeping Bags ‘Bush camping’ on night 3 was in the middle of a camping ground at King’s Canyon, with a well-lit toilet block as our backdrop (>30 metres). Night 4 was in Ormiston Gorge campground. I am personally very annoyed at the sleeping bags. Intrepid’s website states, ‘If you are travelling on a Basix style trip please bring a travel pillow and sleeping bag or pre-purchase a sleeping bag from us. If you do not wish to keep your sleeping bag we will return them to our Operations Department, where they will be washed and donated to local... communities’. We chose to purchase these for $45 each as we liked the idea of helping people in need. These were presented to us open and in garbage bags, obviously faded and used. They are clearly not donated to anybody, rather reused, and if we needed sleeping bags would not have kept these. This is morally highly inappropriate and constitutes false and misleading information. I’d like our $90 back so we can donate it to people in need ourselves. All in all the natural sites on this tour were stunning as to be expected. But anxiety about lack of communication, omissions and poor spirits to boot do not belong on tours like this. I’d like to elaborate on these comments further with Intrepid.

A loss of trust

Reviewed on 2021-05-10T08:20:51

I can see one of my fellow travellers has already posted about 5 day Out back camping tour ex Alice Springs 3/4/21.I support her comments fully. I too was taken back that one full day of a five day trip was spent in transit with nothing other than a lunch stop. This tour runs weekly and had done so for some time and all should be a well oiled machine. Turning up at camp sites that should be pre organised and finding them full and enduring further travel and then sleeping on dirt footpaths and concrete floors and then walking 100mtrs to a public car park where dinner was being served is not acceptable. Though kudos to guide to get dinner out. Tour description stated tent accommodation with an option of a swag. There was no option as everyone was required to sleep in a swag ( an old worn one at that, with no mesh for bugs) for two nights. One night was on mainly bare dirt area next to a brightly lit toilet block, the next as described in previous paragraph. This not being flexible, but deliberate mis information Then the sleeping bag. Intrepid state you can buy a sleeping bag from them, which you can return for them to launder and donate to locals that need them. This seems a scam, all 4 or 5 people who ordered bags received them in garbage bags and mine was so used that the brand tag was worn off and inner lining all pilled. They are clearly reselling bags that are supposedly donated to needy folks. I would like my $45 back. On transiting Alice Springs for resupply, the local office forgot to prepare supplies , requiring guide to call at super market for last minute purchase further delaying an already long travel day. In terms of travel times, Intrepid were open of long travel and quoted travel times, but even though we missed one whole advertised area, travel times were much longer than advertised, why was never explained or was it that they are deliberately minimised in descriptions. Outlines of pending and next day activities were always vague, which leaves me wondering what was happening behind the scenes. Despite all this the places visited were special indeed, but I would recommend other companies options be fully investigated before booking this particular Intrepid trip. I'm not sure I can trust Intrepid tour descriptions where such basic amenities advertised are not delivered. Postscript After looking into issues and other feedback of this tour. Intrepid appear to have taken matter on board and and made real changes to tour organisation. Have refunded cost of sleeping bag, provided some refund of tour cost plus a reasonable discount on a future tour. Good to see an Australian company giving their customers a fair go.

I want to compliment you!

Below this comment is an original review completed last week after I had returned from a trip that did not reach the Intrepid Tours'standards I had come to know and expect. I was feeling the jury was out regarding my confidence to travel with the company again. I am soooo happy to say that the response from the company, and particularly from Liz, was` swift, positive and comprehensive. What could be resolved, has been resolved. I will move forward and can say with certainty that I will be travelling with Intrepid well into the future! ********** I have just returned from my 8th Intrepid trip having done 4 overseas and 4 in Australia. Up until my recent experience, I have been very happy - hence the repeat business. This last trip has, however, left me feeling quite dissatisfied and rattled my confidence in the company to a degree that surprises me. If it had been my first trip with you, it would be my last. This makes me sad. I have recommended Intrepid as my 'go to' travel company to friends and family. I have another trip booked and paid for in September, and now feel a degree of trepidation I never felt before. There were issues with the organisation of tour itself (the 5 day Outback Explorer). The itinerary was changed, but with no explanation given as to why - especially when places that we were guaranteed to visit, specifically those in the East MacDonnell Ranges, were omitted completely. The guide muttered something about recent floods, but this didn't stop other tour companies and travellers from going there. If roads were impassable, then a revised plan should have been sent out prior to the commencement of the tour. Or if the roads were passable but rough, then maybe we should have had a more robust vehicle such as the bus I travelled in from Darwin to Broome along the Gibb River Road. The walks we did were wonderful, and everyone in the group appreciated a hike that hadn't been listed - the Valley of the Winds at Kata Tjuta. But on the 4th day of what was only a 5 day trip there were no activities - we did nothing but sit on the bus from after breakfast until it was almost dark when we had to scramble to get ourselves set up for the night. That afternoon we had to return to Alice Springs for 45 minutes so our guide could pick up food. Of course we need to be flexible, but surely a revised itinerary could have been devised involving another place/s to visit that didn't mean a whole wasted day that was 20% of the tour. Another disappointment for me was that the group was too large for a small group experience. The maximum 16 (and that is pretty big) grew to 18. This was not the fault of the guide or the extra 2 people we acquired on day 2 of the tour, but it seems something went awry somewhere some time with the bookings process. With only one guide and a such a large group of people, this proved challenging, perhaps even more so for the guide than the travellers. Up until now I have had the pleasure of having good to excellent+++ guides on my Intrepid travels. This time, however, it wasn't the case. The guide may have been competent in what he did (driving, setting up camp), but he was arrogant, dismissive to the point of rudeness, and showed no interest in, or regard for, the majority of the group members. He imparted little information other than to wax lyrical and very loudly about his own experiences and knowledge (which he didn't share) and how fit/strong/tough and altogether brilliant he is. I doubt he could name even a third of the group members. He would have no awareness that e.g. one woman was a very experienced guide herself (likely more so than him in overseas travels), or that another has worked with and alongside Indigenous people for over 25 years because he had no interest in most of us. Possibly he found managing so many of us too much, but his lack of communication skills and people skills were surprising given that he purported to be one of your best and most experienced guides. He certainly had no time for the older female group members. It seems natural to assume a guide should not only like what he or she does, but also to feel well disposed towards people generally. It maybe that this guide would be better suited to a different clientele. I believe that as a group, all 18 of us were prepared to be flexible and reasonable, and forgiving of the hiccups that are part of any travelling experience - but every member expressed a significant degree of dissatisfaction. Given the times we are living in, I don't think any tour company can afford for this sort of experience to be repeated. A number of the members of this group said they will not use Intrepid again. I will in September, but have other trips planned but not yet booked. I am truly hoping to have my faith in Intrepid restored.

Great Company with Wonderful Guides.

Reviewed on 2021-04-21T10:54:25

I have used Intrepid since 2016 and I have had close to 10 trips with them in that time. My last tripwith them was to Myanmar in 2019 and I now have a very close friendship with a few of the Tour Guides and had a trip to Hanoi with the Myanmar guide for 5 days. I was due to travel to Thailand with them in March this year but I have postponed the trip to Feb 2022. I am looking forward to travelling again and looking forward to using this company again. I can totally understand some of the reviews that have critcised Intrepid for their refund policy but the Tourist Industry has been hit really badly by this global pandemic but hopefully with the Vaccine etc we are starting to see light at the end of a very long dark tunnel
