A really useful and inexpensive / free genealogy site.

I have to give 5 stars as much to partially balance some of the slanderous comments made below as forthe excellent free info that I have found that wasn't on Ancestry or My H,
I've only used this as a free service so far, and have found some very useful info and DNA matches that weren't on other sites. The interface isn't as good as some, but better than others. But it is much easier to search other people's trees here than either of the majors.
Obviously the database is smaller than others, and this is reflected in the significantly lower subscription price.
As always, check what you are getting before subscribing, and my advice would be to enjoy all the free features and get to know the site properly before signing up and paying.read more
Geneanet and DNA--- first I want to…

Geneanet and DNA--- first I want to point out my opinion to all the complainers. As a genealogistspending large amounts for companies like Ancestry and MyHeritage this is by far the least expensive service to get right now online. The databank is not as large as Ancestry, but the fact that it is free to access family trees of other users is a lot more than what you get in the two major companies that are taking you to the cleaners over many years.
So, remember, nobody is forcing you to pay. I have worked with this company as long as it is online and only a few month ago I decided to pay the small amount they are asking to look at some of the stuff that they have now available. Geneanet is a service more used in Europe which is often a benefit to Americans/Canadians, because it is less expensive paying for using their data base than making a trip overseas.
I am giving you the four stars for the way you have operated over the years, improved the website and have used the advise of your members to improve.
However, if it comes to DNA I have to take down all the stars. But...... it is a free service and I have learned that you never complain if you get something free. You work with it and make the best out of what you get.
DNA improvement is needed!!
Uploaded DNA is analyses totally out of numbers.
I don't even want to go into details, except that I had not one DNA match that was a match. Compared on Gedmatch showed a match, but so low that even myself working with lower matches are not able to find something useful.
Perhaps if geneanet explains how the match system works, we could find a connection.
Right now, my DNA and that of my husband have a fair amount of matches, but not even the matches in the green come out as real matches.
I am sure you will be working on it and I am also sure in time it will work out fine for your company. I will still keep my DNA up and take a look at the names on a regular base.
The four stars are for past performance, staying free for your tree uploads and usage of the system, being able to freely contact people by e-mail and now to let us upload our DNA for free even if that needs major improvement. Keep up the good work.read more

This is a genealogical data base with very sparse data. They don't have enough data to justify their prices. It is more scant than many free sites. And my spam went from a few per week to hundreds per week. It may be happenstance, but I personally wonder. Save your $ for a real genealogical data site.read more

Misleading user interface and defiant support staff

Once I joined Geneanet I discovered that it did not meet my needs so I cancelled within a few days. The user interface led me to believe that I had successfully done that.
To my surprise, after a month I received an email to tell me that my subscription had been automatically renewed.
I contacted them immediately to explain that this was a mistake. The contact person was particularly unhelpful and despite my best efforts to ask for a refund, they simply doubled down and refused to do that.
I consider that theft.
Then, in looking at this site, I discover that several other people have had exactly the same experience.
I have a very poor impression of this company and would never recommend them to anyone.read more

A Scam -- An utterly useless Database and no way to get a Refund!…
Reviewed on 2020-03-06T00:04:44
I found Geneanet.com to be utterly useless, and this, frankly, came as a rude awakening to me becausethe site bills itself as "Eurocentric" and claims "3 million members who share their genealogical information for free: more than 6 billion individuals in the family trees," Well, I had been both a basic and premium member of MyHeritage.com for 5 years and, through painstaking personal research in LDS-Church microfilms of German parish registers, the holdings of city and state archives in Germany, reviews of pertinent literature in the German language, and endless e-mail exchanges with genealogists and regional experts in Germany, had managed to build a family Website and family tree reaching back as far as the early 1600's that I had been able to expand to well over 3,000 person entries using the MyHeritage.com search engines. Nevertheless, I had finally hit a dead end in my search and had hoped for help from Geneanet.com. I was stunned to find not a single member of my family in the Geneanet database, although everyone of my forebears whom I put through this test had been fully documented and verified by multiple means. As soon as I discovered how totally useless the Geneanet database was to me, I contacted Geneanet via e-mail and demanded my premium membership fee back, and I did this within just 1-2 days after my Geneanet membership took effect. I never received anything other than a non-responsive, boilerplate reply stating that I was not entitled to a refund after "expiration of the cancellation period." Nowhere, in anything that I was presented with when I applied for membership did I find any mention of the "duration of the cancellation period." I then demanded answers to two questions: 1: What is the duration of your cancellation period? and 2. What is your refund policy? After several follow-up requests, I am still waitng for answers. My conclusion: Geneanet is a scam!.My advice;: Stay away. Use MyHertitage.com... .read more
