Freecycle moderator revenge?

Reviewed on 2021-05-23T10:31:43

The concept of Freecycle, ie saving items from the tip etc, is one i identify with completely.I had no problems using the site until one day I spotted a wanted post that appeared to be offering financial reward in return for the desired items. As this is against the Freecycle ethos I reported it to the groups moderators. I received a rude reply from the sole moderator, at the time, of the group. Turns out it was his or her post. Thats when things started to go wrong for me on Freecycle. Shortly after my email notifications were turned off. This i noticed by the absence of emails after a few days. So I reinstated the notifications only for them to be turned off again repeatedly. Then one morning i found that i had been logged out and when i tried to log back in my email address and username were not recognised. So i created another account and reported it to the main Freecycle site, circumventing the local group moderators. I messaged the local moderators to inform i was reporting them for interfering with my account since nobody else has access to my secure device. Predictably i had no response from either. My notification emails do not go to my spam folder by the way. My email notifications change daily now, sometimes twice daily. So Freecycle in theory is a great idea but it appears it isn't free from basic human failings like spite, jealousy and revenge.

A Great Website Broken-Fixed Again!

Reviewed on 2021-05-20T19:39:57

OK,The review below was for this new 'beta test' website that I couldn't get rid of. After followingthe advice in the reply below I have got the proper website back and working and upped the rating accordingly. Thanks for the fix. Mycroft. If I had given this review a month ago I would have given 5 stars as I have used freecycle for several years, giving and also collecting items, keeping so much stuff out of land-fill HOWEVER..... The new style website is awful! It does not work properly and automatically loads pictures which I don't need, sucking into my data for no good reason, even with stuff that has been taken. Why do I need to see that???? It is also not working properly, on my phone or PC, if I try to view my saved groups (Banstead for instance as I am in Merton, Greater London) it just freezes and I have to use the back button and look at the mass of groups all slung together. Pages don't load properly on phone (Android). Very sad as this was a great website, ruined for no good reason! Remember, if it aint broke, don't fix it!

No longer works with new software

Reviewed on 2021-05-04T09:03:37

If it works don't fix it, because now freecycle just doesn't work!!! Freecycle is a Brilliant concept, was so easy to use and worked a treat. They have now updated it and it kicks you out back onto the old site, which then kicks you out to the new site. So annoying and was clearly never tested before implementing I've lived in the UK for ever, use Vodafone in the UK as my service provider and never had a problem with the site until recently, the old and the new. Tried it on 2 separate phones and a laptop! Switched to another site now that works and won't be coming back to Freecycle! As I said, if it works, don't fix it!!!!

Brilliant service, needs a facelift.

Reviewed on 2021-04-28T21:45:06

Brilliant service, needs a redesign. The execution is simple, with message boards and email loops to keep an eye on what's being given away. The community aspect of Freecycle is well-executed, however there are a few glitches to make note of when using the website. First of all, the site lacks any responsive styling. This means that users on mobile phones are completely out of luck, stuck using a '00 design with dialog boxes misaligned (halfway off) the screen. There is also nothing in the way of a mobile app. It's clear they have a *lot* to catch up on, but I can't wait to see them do it.

A good concept, but-

Reviewed on 2021-04-25T09:48:58

A good concept, this, though - as other reviewers have noted - the site itself looks very outdated. Also, the photos (of the objects available) don't properly display on Android. I love the general idea of the site overall, but definitely it would benefit from some tweaking and a few alterations in style, design, and overall functioning.

Worst possible site to give something…

Reviewed on 2021-04-23T14:59:14

Worst possible site to give something for free, even selling on ebay is much easier.Seems like only a few select few are allowed to post and moderators don't seem to exist to aprove your posts. Don't waste time, just go to a charity shop!

The website is outdated; mods are terrible,

Reviewed on 2021-03-14T22:03:41

The moderators are terrible. Never have I met a group of people so hell-bent on executing their own rules and regulations, often without rhyme or reason. Tried to advertise something and was told that it wasn't 'pandemic essential' as per guidelines that the mods never appear to have published anywhere. Asking for an explanation, I got a very rude and very snappy response. These sites are all very well and good in concept but until they stop allowing individuals with control issues to act as moderators, then it's a no from me. The website itself could really do with modernising as well. It's not 1997 for gods' sake.
