What does Puffin + Sprout do?

Grow your own veg in London, no matter how small your space. At Puffin + Sprout, we're here to help you choose the right plants for your space, whatever the size and amount of light. We deliver small veg plants (called plugs) straight to your door that are strong enough to survive those "Argh! I didn't water it today!" moments. That's because we know you don't need an allotment, or to be Jeremy Corbyn, to grow your own food. You can do it whether you are in the middle of Soho or at the end of the Northern Line. Our service means that there's no need to worry about seeds, germination phases, soil types or repotting. You just get healthy little plants in the right-sized pots. Being a plant parent simply means that you care for it a bit, and watch it grow up big and strong with pride.

Lifting spirits in lockdown!

From the start, Rob and Charlie have been brilliant. Keeping in contact to check in on the first project, the terrarium and to try and understand what I wanted to get out of the subscription to make it the best experience. The Terrarium kit was easy and fun to do, the instructions and video made it a great project to complete. Then additional access to other members on the forum allows for sharing experiences and gaining tips which is a great plus for the budding amateur city gardener.

Brought me greenery and a little joy in 2020

Reviewed on 2020-12-31T12:24:26

I found Box & Sprout when they were still Puffin & Sprout and lockdown had me craving life and growth and greenery.Rob and Charlie are so helpful and generous with their time and knowledge. And me, always a plant killer, now has happy green plants about the place (okay, yes, I have killed some of them, but I'm learning to do better)!

Monthly plant surprise

Reviewed on 2020-12-30T11:52:01

I joined the sprout box club in late November and got my first box (a terrarium) in December. It comes all packaged with recyclable materials with everything you need in paper bags labelled up and a booklet. There's also a YouTube video if you want to watch instead of reading. The terrarium plants were lovely and healthy and there was enough to pot up an extra little plant too that has been getting frequent misting. Really looking forward to getting my mushroom box in January and being able to grow my own food throughout the year too. Rob and Charlie have been really knowledgeable and seem to genuinely love what they are doing. I'd recommend the subscription to anyone who's looking to add to their plant collection and grow their own in a small city space.

Sprout Box Club

Reviewed on 2020-12-19T01:25:59

**22/4/21 update - great idea in theory, but some imo, big issues in practise. I loved the idea of a regular monthly box for creating an indoor green space, after moving to London and no longer having a garden. My first and only box was a terrarium, which I reviewed the same month, see below. As stated then, I was thrilled and really happy to be part of this new small business. I liked the personal service, being a 2 man enterprise, and figured any teething issues would likely resolve. My payment plan somehow didn't get updated after the first month, so my account went inactive, and I'd intended on getting it updated, the company were struggling with sorting their payment method, but again, I knew being new it was teething issues. I have zero issue with that. My issues are really on what you get for the money. For £30 a month you pay for a box of do it yourself planting kit. Each month is a different thing. My terrarium was a large Mason jar, some, imo, low quality soil, some pea shingle, charcoal, matting and 2 small plants. The video amd booklet were a nice touch. Though I had reservations, I ploughed ahead. They opened a Facebook group forum for members and again, was happy initially but it isn't popularly used The cracks started showing when my terrarium plants started struggling. They were dying. I check on mine, bearing in mind I'd done what was suggested, like everyone else, and lo and behold, my plants were dying. Leaves falling off and no root system due to the plant type, soil and environment. I'd split the larger one at the outset and potted on the second bit out of the terrarium, so I still had some left, and I'm trying to save the other, but this box was a fail. I've followed the boxes that were received after and actually feel relieved I didn't continue. Second box was mushrooms and what the members got was again far from £30 value, tho it looks like they were successful. Maybe others are happy with that. March was potatoes. Depending on variety, you can't plant out mid or late potatoes until after risk of frost has passed or get covered over, yet customers were planting and they were in leaf in March but had no idea they needed protecting. Again, couple seed potatoes, soil and a rather small container for £30, firstly not suited to London apartment dwellers and certainly not something I'd spend £30 for. Luckily, I didn't. April was herbs. I've not checked what they got. Herbs is a good one for city dwellers, but hope what was received is a reflection on the price point. I really hope they pull it around but they really need to up their game. Tailor to their audience more, make the subscription worthy of the price point, or lower it to reflect what you get. Right now? It really isn't value for money, and it would be a case of people wishing to be loyal to a couple of very friendly guys starting out - and they are truly lovely guys. Rob and Charlie are very personable and friendly. I really truly hope they can review what they do, because it's no longer a unique proposition and local competitors are offering more value for money. End update** 19/12/20 I joined the Sprout Box Club subscription and received my first box in December, which was a terrarium and plants plus everything we needed. The service received was second to none, being a small business they give a very personal service and answer questions and deal with enquiries and deliveries themselves. I'm loving the club so far and looking forward to learning about more plants and having the opportunity to grow things in a city environment. Highly recommend and will be buying plants as well from these two lovely guys.
